Thoughts on predictions of doom

Some people believe the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012, although scientists say this is nonsense and there is no scientific proof for it.

I recently watched the hit Hollywood movie 2012. It revolves around a man who battles to save his ex-wife and their children, and also her boyfriend, as the global disaster unfolds.

The film reveals both the positive and negative sides of humans. After returning from the cinema, I started to think about whether the world could possibly end in a further three years.

I hope not. If the multiple catastrophes do really happen, we could all be dead. It would be so horrible - I can't even think about being separated from my loved ones. Facing such an uncertain future, we should treasure what we have now - our family and friends. I love them all and I hope you do too.

Thank you for your letter, Cara. Since the beginning of time people have believed the world will end. And here we are.

The only danger with this sort of thing is that some people will take it seriously, as has happened with some religious cults who believe they will be the sole survivors. They can waste an awful amount of time and energy on trying to convince others to see things their way.

If the world is going to end, there is not much anyone can do about it. This means there is no reason to worry about it. It's best to live your life as well as you can, and let the future take care of itself.
