TT jackpot gives turnover a boost
Whatever the background to it, nobody at Sports Road is complaining, with betting turnover again exceeding expectations on a programme described by one as 'nine and a half races.' One year ago, the club had 10 races on the turf - a stronger recipe than the seven on dirt and three on the turf - but bettered the turnover by some US$62 million with the Triple Trio jackpot leading the charge. 'Of course the jackpot helped, but normally the dirt races don't provide the same turnover as turf events,' said chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. 'But there seems to be some momentum now to the turnover increases. It may be the more optimistic mood in the economy now, I don't know, but it is very pleasing and I hope that it is a sign of the enthusiasm for the sport coming into our biggest week with the Cathay Pacific International Races.' With half of the jackpot carrying over to next Sunday, that looks assured.
