A Citybus driver has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed an 83-year-old woman in Moreton Terrace, Causeway Bay, on Sunday.

The 54-year-old man was held at a bus terminus in North Point on Monday night after a passenger and a passer-by tipped off police, who had appealed for information. The woman was knocked down and dragged by the bus in Moreton Terrace at about 4pm on Sunday.

'One of [the witnesses] was a passenger in the bus involved in the [accident], and the other was a pedestrian,' a police officer said. 'They provided useful information to us. The bus driver had not approached police after the [accident].'

The man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and failing to report and stop after an accident. He has been bailed to report back in March.

Citybus driver Tang Wai-cheong, who knows the arrested man, said the man had joined the company about 10 years ago and had been a good driver. 'He is a quiet, family man with no record of involvement in serious accidents,' Tang said.

The double-decker involved in the accident, serving Citybus route 5X from Kennedy Town to Causeway Bay, has been taken to a government vehicle plant in Quarry Bay for inspection. The police officer refused to reveal whether any evidence such as blood was found on the vehicle.

'It was among 24 buses police have suspected to be linked with the crash, and the related bus companies were asked not to wash the vehicles,' the officer said.

New World First Bus, parent company of Citybus, said the bus was seized after being shortlisted for a second examination on Monday, while the driver was arrested on duty at about 11pm that day. A spokeswoman said the company would co-operate fully with police.

Police say 117 people died in 105 fatal traffic accidents in the first 10 months of the year. Some 135 people were killed in 116 accidents in the same period last year.
