Every district should have a cycle track to help promote green living

I have written to Secretary for Development Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor urging her to sanction the construction of a cycle track at Tsing Yi.

Sometimes, when my family and I have travelled to scenic places like Beijing, Guilin and Hangzhou , we spent some of our time there cycling.

I carried my five-year-old daughter in a seat behind me while riding with my wife and enjoying picturesque views.

At such times, I thought life could not be better. It made me ask why I had to visit the mainland to do that.

In Hong Kong, apart from a few places like the heavily congested cycle track in Tai Wai, we cannot enjoy this activity.

There is another track in West Kowloon, but it is in an inconvenient location.

I think the government should consider constructing a cycling path in every district in Hong Kong.

I live in Tsing Yi and it would be the perfect location for a pilot scheme. The island shoreline is around 12 kilometres long. Families would welcome the opportunity to use some of that for cycling.

Cycling is healthy and should be part of the green-living concept that is widely encouraged in Hong Kong and many other world cities.

It also has social benefits as it is a perfect family activity. However, unlike other world-class cities, Hong Kong lags behind when it comes to providing enough cycling tracks to meet demand.

Given that Tsing Yi is an island, it would be easy to ring it with a cycle track. However, I appreciate that there may be difficulties in implementing this proposal and managing such a track.

Perhaps the reason that attempts to provide more tracks have failed is because of the difficulty of co-ordinating different departments.

However, given her track record, I am sure Mrs Lam could get round these difficulties.

The popularity of the government has hit new lows. I feel that the provision of more cycle tracks might show that, in this respect, the administration is trying to meet the needs of the public.
