Two hurt in acid attack on estate

A bottle of acid was thrown from a block of flats on a public housing estate in Tuen Mun yesterday, injuring a man and his eight-year-old son.

The bottle appeared to contain acid of the same type as that hurled into a pedestrianised part of Lockhart Road, next to Sogo in Causeway Bay, last Saturday. Six people were hurt, two seriously, in that attack. Police would not say if the two attacks were linked. They follow three acid attacks on Mong Kok shopping streets in the past year, in which 101 people were injured, and another last month in Sham Shui Po.

The plastic bottle was thrown from Tip Chui House, on the Butterfly Estate, at about 6pm. The acid splashed the faces of two passers-by - a 51-year-old man and his son. They were treated in hospital for minor injuries. Last night police were still looking for the attacker or attackers.

Police Superintendent Leung Chin-wah said it was too early to say whether one attacker, or more than one, was involved. 'It is not just a copycat incident but a challenge to police and housing officials,' said So Oi-kwan, a district councillor. Housing officials had agreed to install surveillance cameras, he said.

In the past week several items, including glass bottles, a saw and an iron, have been thrown from the same building. No one was hurt.
