Magician on receiving end as Wan Chai joker makes his cards vanish

Magician David Blaine got a taste of his own medicine while visiting Hong Kong recently, when the pack of playing cards he was using to show fans his tricks inexplicably vanished. Blaine was spotted walking at night down Lockhart Road in Wan Chai. Before long he was surrounded by onlookers and pulled out a set of playing cards to do some tricks for them.

But the illusionist and escape artist - who has been encased in a block of ice, entombed in an underground plastic box under a three-tonne water-filled tank for seven days, and sealed for 44 days inside a transparent plexiglas case suspended 10 metres in the air without food - apparently can't keep track of a pack of cards.

People were lining up to get their photographs taken and it was while he was happily posing to have one taken with two Irish fans (below) that his set of cards mysteriously disappeared.

'While we were having our pictures taken with him, I just slipped my hand in his coat pocket and took his cards,' the slick Irish magician said. 'He never noticed, and before long we were playing a game of cards ourselves with the pack a few yards up the street.

'Eventually he saw us and started searching his pockets for his cards but couldn't find them. He just gave us a dirty look and walked away with his entourage. Now I can have a game of poker round my house with David Blaine's cards.'

Blaine's night of misery was completed later when an Australian fan recognised him and asked him to do a trick. 'He said he couldn't,' the disappointed Aussie said, 'because some guys had stolen his cards earlier on in the night.'
