Figures plunge like temperature

The cold early winter conditions and the sharp drop in entertainment value from the events of the international meeting last weekend saw punters stay at home. And even a small increase in turnover wasn't enough to warm up the day for Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. The club's turnover has been running at an increase of more than 4 per cent for the season so far, but yesterday's affair was flat, with an increase of HK$4 million year on year - or less than half a per cent. 'The return for the late scratching, First In Command, didn't help us, but this was one of our lowest turnover weekend meetings last year and so it has been again. At least it's not snowing,' Engelbrecht-Bresges said. The bright spot was the Jockey Challenge turnover - which doubled from last year's HK$3 million and was taken out by treble-winning rider Douglas Whyte.
