Christmas promotions cost Hutchison and Wharf HK$14m
Retail landlords Hutchison Whampoa Properties and Wharf (Holdings) are splashing out a combined HK$14 million on promotional campaigns to lure Christmas shoppers to their shopping centres.
Florence Lee, the chief manager for promotions at Hutchison Whampoa Properties, said HK$5 million had been spent promoting sales at its Wonderful Worlds of Whampoa shopping centre in Hung Hom.
The budget was increased 10 per cent from last year, Lee said, and sales this month were expected to rise 15 to 20 per cent from a year ago.
The budget included displays and prizes for lucky draws aimed at boosting the sales of the building's 200 tenants who sell everything from electronics goods to jewellery and mobile phones.
Separately, Wharf has spent HK$9 million on promotions to lure customers to its Times Square shopping centre in Causeway Bay where visitor traffic reached 180,000 last weekend, according to a spokeswoman.
'Our sales have increased about 10 per cent so far this month from a year ago,' the spokeswoman added, and a record number of visitors were expected this weekend.
