Whyte to justify favouritism in Challenge

Douglas Whyte holds all the aces in this afternoon's Jockey Challenge and has been posted a clear $2.60 favourite with his book of eight rides.

Champion Whyte has leading chances in most of the races and should be hard to hold out. This season's leading jockey, Brett Prebble, also has eight rides, but his book lacks the depth.

After narrowly missing out in recent Challenges as a short-priced favourite, Prebble looks far-less likely at $8.50.

Darren Beadman has a good chance of claiming a couple of 12-pointers, but with only four rides in total - half the number of Whyte - it is a game bet even at $11.

Whyte can get on the board early with Seize The Day, a top chance in the first, before consolidating with St Didar in the following event.

His best chance appears to be Winner Smart in race seven, and Appreciation has undeniable claims to the featured race nine.

His other rides - Many Gains, Spinnaker and Glory Of India - could provide some points and, if he can chalk up a few minor placings, or even snare another win along the way, then he will take a lot of catching over the final section of the card.

Johan Victoire boasts eight rides and could prove a value chance at $7.50, while Jeff Lloyd has claims at $8.50.

But it must be Whyte, who is rated on top in the Jockey Challenge, as he sets about mounting a challenge of his own to runaway premiership leader Prebble.
