Officials were cracking champagne bottles a second time for the new year after turnover for the first meeting of 2010 burst through the HK$1.1 billion barrier. The HK$1.1096 billion in totalisator betting handle was complemented by more than HK$7 million wagered on the fixed odds of the Jockey Challenge. The day ranked in the top four turnover days of the past two completed seasons - with two of those season-finale meetings. It was also the second 'billion day' and the benchmark for the term. And without a single exotic jackpot in sight to boost the day's betting interest, the rise of more than HK$120 million in turnover from New Year's Day 2009 was read as a positive sign. 'Our figures have been on the positive side all season and, as the start of a fresh year, this is confirmation of the real optimism you can feel in the community,' said chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges.
