World Cup 2010

Once every four years, the premier football event on the planet whips the entire world into a fever for one month. This summer's showpiece will be no exception. Thirty-two national teams will battle it out in South Africa from June 11 to July 11. This is the first time the World Cup is being held in Africa.

Lunar New Year/Valentine's Day

This year, February 14 is a double whammy, no doubt leaving young people trying to figure out how to juggle the demands of Lunar New Year family visits and Valentine's Day dates. The last time the two coincided was in 1953 and the next time will be in 2048.

'Eclipse'

The movie version of the third of Stephanie Meyer's four-instalment Twilight saga is scheduled for a June release. Once again, Bella faces danger on all sides and is forced to choose between her love for vampire Edward Cullen and her friendship with werewolf Jacob Black.

Shanghai Expo

Hailed by the government as an 'Economic Olympics', the World Expo 2010 is an opportunity for China to showcase its economic might as a rising power of the 21st century - as well as Shanghai's role as the country's leading economic hub. The expositions will be running for half a year, from May 1 to October 31. More than 190 countries and 50 international organisations will showcase their image, concepts and goods. With the theme, 'Better City, Better Life', the focus is on improving the urban environment.

Inaugural Youth Olympic Games

The first youth version of the Olympics will be launched this year. Around 5,000 athletes, aged 14 to 18 from 205 countries, will compete in 26 sports in Singapore between August 14 and 26.

Electoral reform

Last November, the government unveiled a proposal for modifying arrangements for electing the chief executive and legislators in 2012. The end of a three-month public consultation on February 19 will signal the start of a series of debates and negotiations between pro-Beijing and pan-democratic lawmakers. July will see a vote on amending the Basic Law. Expect to see some fireworks, because a lot is at stake.

'StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty'

Game fans have been waiting over a decade for a new episode of the groundbreaking online real-time strategy game released in 1998. No exact date has been set for its release, but developer Activision Blizzard has scheduled it for this year.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1

Millions of fans will watch the final showdown between Harry and Lord Voldemort on the big screen in the first part of the film adaptation of the best-selling novel. Part 2 is scheduled for a 2011 release.

United Nations

Climate Change Summit

World leaders will meet again, this time in Mexico City, in December to discuss unresolved issues from last month's summit in Copenhagen. The conference will focus on achieving a legally-binding treaty requiring countries to set carbon-emission targets.
