Vintage classics

Almost every metropolis worth its salt has a vintage designer shrine - Los Angeles has Resurrection and Decades and Paris, Didier Ludot. Hong Kong is not so fortunate; the vintage fashion selection on offer here is often limited to battered T-shirts and oversized sunnies, leaving us little choice but to travel abroad to get our designer fix.

It is for that reason that local stylist and fashionista Tina Leung established Era, an online vintage treasure trove featuring one-of-a-kind couture dresses from iconic designers such as Hubert Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent.

A regular fixture on the social scene, Leung grew tired of seeing tai tais dressed in the same off-the-peg frocks and decided that what the local market needed was a choice of high-octane couture gowns. Armed with a fine eye for style and a love of all things beautiful, she trotted off to all corners of the globe, along the way picking up a selection of timeless and unique gowns.

Currently on the rails are a signature red gown by Valentino (circa 1970s), with a plunging V neckline and ruched detailing (below left), and a Grecian-inspired pink chiffon number with a beaded neckline by Oscar de la Renta (bottom left). Leung has also added a selection of bridal wear to the site, ranging from feminine styles decorated with lace and beading to sleek modern draped gowns. Other couture designers on file include greats such as Galanos and Esteves. She will soon add Lanvin, Halston, Oleg Cassini and Thierry Mugler to the roster.

What makes Era that much more appealing is the fact that, after a customer has browsed the 'racks' online, their choice can be brought to their home, so they can play Cinderella in their own bedroom. To ensure that each dress fits perfectly, Era offers an alteration service, while Leung is also prepared to source matching accessories, including shoes, clutches and jewellery.

Prices are available upon request and range between HK$10,000 and HK$40,000.
