Challenge your writing skills

Adrian Wan

Young writers now have an exciting opportunity to have their work assessed by renowned writers and poets in the City Literary Awards.

Organised by City University of Hong Kong, the annual Chinese writing competition is accepting entries on the theme of 'Man and nature' until the end of the month, after which they will be reviewed by a team of 12 prominent writers and poets.

Under the theme of 'Man and Nature,' the competition encourages young hopefuls to express their thoughts on environmental issues.

'While cities are created by mankind, nature is what humans rely on for survival,' said Dr Ma Ka-fai, assistant director of CityU's Chinese Civilisation Centre. 'They should not be opposing forces.'

Tertiary students and young people aged 15 to 24 in Hong Kong and Macau can submit their entries to one of the four categories: prose, short stories, poetry and cultural and art criticism. A total of 367 entries were received last year.

The adjudicators include Chang Ta-chun, Bei Dao, Yang Ze and Yang Zhao. Chang Ta-chuen is a leading Chinese novelist. A shining star in Taiwan literary circles, Chang's novels filter the contemporary world through magic realism. Bei Dao is a leading mainland poet who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature. An honorary life fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, he has received literary awards from Sweden and America and his poems have been translated into more than 20 different languages.
