Water is the essence of life

Sunday, 01 April, 2012, 10:22am

Like other children, I didn't like to drink water when I was young. I drank only fruit juices and soft drinks.

This continued until my teeth started going bad and I put on a lot of weight.

I began to be concerned about the high sugar levels in fruit juices and soft drinks. Then I swapped them with light and healthy drinks, which tasted just as good. And I discovered the benefits of water. I drink several glasses a day now.

Many people are not aware of the goodness of water. To remain healthy and hydrated, have a glass of water right now.

Thank you for your letter, Iris. Many people think they can quench their thirst with sugary fruit juices or chemical-laden fizzy drinks. Some even think they 'need' these drinks. This is simply not true.

What is true is that your body needs a certain amount of liquid to continue to work properly. As water is natural and easily absorbed, this is the best way to quench your thirst. Drinking sweet drinks can actually prolong your thirst. The big secret is that the more water you drink, the more you will want to drink. It's a habit, like most healthy things in life.
