The rise follows a 7 per cent increase in the number of student visas Britain issued to Hongkongers in the second two quarters of last year compared with 2008.

Baptist University's ruling council has approved a 5.38 per cent salary cut for 440 employees in higher salary bands - about 18 per cent of full-time staff - after the government cut its funding by HK$22 million a year. The cut will affect all staff earning more than HK$48,700, including president Ng Ching-fai and senior managers. The university said it had no other option after the reduction in funding.
