Li Peng resurfaces... on the bookshelves

A new book by former premier Li Peng , who has been largely absent from public life reportedly due to health problems, hit stores across the country yesterday, Xinhua reported. The book, Li Peng on Sustainable Growth, collected 141 articles, speeches, correspondences and interviews between 1983 and 2009, on diverse topics. Li, 82, was one of the hardliners who supported a military crackdown on student protesters during the 1989 democratic movement. Staff Reporter

Man chops hospital staff and patient in Jiangmen

At least four female medical staff and one patient were chopped by a stranger in a hospital in Jiangmen, Guangdong, on Saturday, the Yangcheng Evening News reports. The paper said a man in his 30s and armed with a knife had gone to several wards. An unidentified witness was quoted as saying the attacker apparently had intended to throw himself out of a window but was subdued and arrested. All five victims were in stable condition.
