The four-year-old girl who survived a fall from a shopping mall balcony when her mother leaped to her death is under observation at Caritas Medical Centre.

The young girl was hurled by her 41-year-old mother from the seventh floor of the Dragon Centre in Sham Shui Po on Sunday afternoon, but landed in a net below and suffered no serious injuries. But the mother crashed through the safety net - intended to prevent rubbish falling on pedestrians below - and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The daughter, a kindergarten pupil, managed to climb to safety with the help of a shopper.

The family had been eating lunch at the mall, and some reports said there was a heated argument between the child's parents shortly before the incident. The mother had recently learned that her child had failed to get a primary place at an English Schools Foundation school, despite attending an ESF kindergarten.

A spokeswoman for the foundation said that parents knew if their children attended an ESF kindergarten they were not guaranteed a place in an ESF primary school.

The mother had no history of mental illness and the family did not have a background of domestic violence.
