Don't waste your lai see

We shouldn't only spend our lai see buying things for ourselves, but should use it to help others.

The Lunar New Year is coming and it is traditionally the time to buy lots of new clothes, furniture and other things.

But these things are hardly ever completely 'necessary'.

It can be pleasant to buy things without thinking about others, but I would be happier doing something to help another person.

I have decided to donate any lai see I receive during the holiday to the Red Cross and do what I can to help the poor.

There are many ways to help others. I am not telling you to donate all your money to a charitable organisation. The most important thing is to think about whether the things you want to buy are really worth buying. Perhaps you could consider making a small donation.

From the Editor

Thank you for your letter, Fizen. The word on the street is that students can look forward to bulging lai see packets this year, but I'm not so sure that is true. Many people have lost their jobs and there is still a lot of economic uncertainty out there.

While most of our readers will be saving up for their futures, no one can frown on a little splurge of buying for yourself - it's what keeps the economy going after all.

But that said, there are plenty of deserving causes out there. One that is closer to home is the disaster happening in Mongolia, where bad winter weather has taken its toll on livestock. Many people in Mongolia rely on livestock, and if they don't get any help, they will have to go to the city to look for work. Apparently World Vision is helping these people.
