Man arrested for ramming his wife with car, punching her
A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of furious driving and assault occasioning actual bodily harm after ramming his estranged wife with his car and punching her, in Lam Tin yesterday.
The 28-year-old woman, surnamed Shum, sustained injuries to her head, neck and legs, and was in serious condition at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Investigation showed the woman refused to let her husband see their eight-year-old son, of whom she has custody, a police officer said. Last night, the boy was being cared for in the Social Welfare Department's children's reception centre.
The incident happened at about 7.20am, as the woman was taking the boy to catch his school bus outside Hong Wah Court, in Lin Tak Road.
Police said the man, surnamed Tse, approached them and said he wanted to talk to his wife, but she refused. After their son got into the school bus, the man returned to his car and drove towards her.
'Initial investigation showed that he swerved to hit her and she fell onto the ground,' an officer said. 'The impact was not hard, as the car was not travelling fast.' The man then crashed the car into a flowerbed.
'He got out and started punching her before being stopped by passers-by,' the officer said. The woman was initially taken to United Christian Hospital and later transferred. Last night, the man was being detained at Kwun Tong police station for questioning and no charge had been laid.
The Social Welfare Department has provided support to the couple for their family problems since last year. 'We are following up the case and looking into the welfare needs of the family,' a spokeswoman said.
