China rules!

The mainland not only contributes cheap 'Made in China' products to the world, but also a lot of job opportunities.

After the economic turmoil, job markets in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries have been getting worse. China offers an alternative for foreigners. According to 'Hit by crisis, young foreigners find China a land of opportunity' (SCMP, September 25), Mikala, a university graduate, was earning only US$7 an hour in the US. But as an English teacher in China, she makes 14,000 to 16,000 yuan (HK$15,900-HK$18,200) a month.

While other countries struggle with their sluggish economy, China's economy is still growing. America's unemployment rate is going to rise to about 10 per cent this year, but there will still be millions of jobs in China

China isn't just a land of opportunity. I have great confidence that China will pass the US to have the strongest economy and become the most powerful nation. China's rise will continue to shake up the world.

Thank you for your letter, Marcus. It just goes to prove the old adage that 'in the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king'. If someone has a set of skills no one else has, they are likely to find a job.

For instance, in those countries where there is a high priority on education, there is a big shortage of plumbers, painters and electricians. People who have those sorts of skills are in great demand and can command a very high wage.

Further, let us not forget that during the crisis, many hundreds of thousands of mainland factory workers lost their jobs. This would have shaken many countries to their core. It may still shake China.
