Antje expected to be back on patrol after quarantine

Police dog Antje was found to be healthy after a medical check-up yesterday and will return to her handler after a week in quarantine.

Antje, a Belgian shepherd, is expected to resume duty if she passes an assessment - which includes tests of obedience and agility - to see whether she is capable of patrol duty after her 10 days lost in the city.

Antje's weight had dropped by one kilogram to 22kg, but was considered healthy, a police spokeswoman said.

Her left front leg had a minor injury when she was found.

The three-year-old bitch went missing from kennels in Cheung Sha Wan police station on February 7 and was found on Wednesday evening at Kau Wa Keng Old Village, Kwai Chung - about one kilometre away.

Villager Chan Chi-kit recalled how he found Antje. 'The dog was seated in front of my village house, wagging its tail asking for food,' said Chan, who had opened his door after hearing village dogs baking.

'Antje is lovely and affable, I gave the command sit and it sat immediately,' Chan said, adding that he gave Antje a big bowl of dog food, which was gobbled up in minutes.

Because it was unusual to see such a breed in the village and as he recalled news of a missing dog, Chan called the police station, which sent officers to his home in 10 minutes.
