Post teams scoop six international awards for excellence in design

The South China Morning Post's design teams have won six Awards of Excellence in the Society for News Design's 31st Best of News Design creative competition.

The winners were among 1,000 honoured in the international design competition, which received more than 10,000 entries this year.

The winning entries appeared in the South China Morning Post, Post Magazine and Young Post. The illustrations covered a diverse range of topics, including: a feature series about Chinese soccer, a magazine cover story about a potential flaw in the world fleet of Airbus A330s and illustrated profiles of noted historical figures.

The team included art directors Terry Pontikos, Carl Jones, Steve Ellul, assistant art director Stephen Case, chief illustrator Henry Wong, and senior graphic designer Angela Ho. Photo editor Yves Sieur won two awards in the 'photography/ multiple photos' category.

'We're very pleased to win recognition from the Society for News Design for the outstanding work of our designers and artists,' editor-in-chief Reginald Chua said. 'We're in the business of communication and information, and oftentimes a well-chosen image, a great layout, or a strong illustration can tell readers much more than words alone can.'

The annual event attracts entries from general circulation newspapers from around the world and honours design, graphics and photography. Last year, the Post won four awards.

The society's awards for the 'world's best-designed newspapers' this year went to The New York Times (US), Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (Germany), and der Freitag (Germany).
