Stand up for what you believe
A Facebook group called 'School Children Stand Up for Your Planet' wants students around the world to literally stand up to voice their frustration at environmental problems.
The group has attracted 721 members so far, who will stand up for 10 minutes at 10am today.
Britain's Peter Spedding was involved in setting up the group. 'The idea is to create a young people's movement,' he says.
Spedding said the idea evolved from a class discussion about the Copenhagen Conference. Some students felt leaders were not listening to the younger generations.
'We have found that the environment is an issue that young people are passionate about but they are ignored at every turn [by decision-makers],' said Spedding.
The Hong Kong coordinator is 13-year-old Jiang Zixin from Diocesan Boy's School. 'We demand immediate action rather than talks from the leaders for the next generation,' he says. The teenager has been using Facebook to urge local students to get involved.
Other participants come from Diocesan Girls' School, Ying Wa College, Maryknoll Fathers' School among others.
'Young people have a voice and a right to express it, says Spedding. 'We hope the campaign will become the largest demonstration of the will of young people ever.'
