Domestic helper dies after hit by minibus

A domestic helper from Indonesia died after a minibus knocked her down in Quarry Bay yesterday in the third such accident involving a helper in three days.

A red-top minibus was travelling along King's Road towards Shau Kei Wan when it hit the 40-year-old woman at about 1.10pm, at the junction with Westlands Road, throwing her several metres. She was taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital with serious head injuries, and was declared dead at 4.18pm.

Police said the minibus driver, a man aged 54, passed a breathalyser test. They are appealing for witnesses to call them at 3106 8849 or 3106 8800.

On Monday, a 68-year-old Filipino helper died after being hit by a taxi that mounted a pavement on Kennedy Road in Central, while a helper remains in critical condition after an ambulance hit her in Sha Tau Kok on Sunday.

Meanwhile, police are investigating whether a fatal crash in Ma On Shan was triggered by the driver's health problems.

On Monday night, a green minibus crashed into a bus stop on Sai Sha Road, killing a passer-by and injuring five others. Some passengers reported that the driver, 28, had had a seizure and fainted before the crash.

A police officer said initial investigations showed the man was not epileptic, though he suffered a seizure in the past. He did not say if the seizure was recent.

The driver suffered no apparent injury in the crash and was sent to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin for an examination, police said. He has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death, and was released on bail of HK$5,000 yesterday. Police are also checking if the minibus exceeded the speed limit of 50km/h. They are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 3661 1300 or 3661 1346.

The minibus hit Chan Shuk-han, 53, and her 24-year-old daughter who were waiting at the bus stop. The mother was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.

The daughter and four minibus passengers were taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment.
