Socom: US Navy Seals Fireteam Bravo 3

Storming onto the Sony PlayStation Portable, Socom: US Navy Seals Fireteam Bravo 3 is an action-packed shooter.

As Wraith, your mission is to lead a four-person Seal unit on a hunt for an ex-KGB agent who is thought to be withholding information about weapons of mass destruction that have fallen into terrorist hands.

Players have to shoot their way through eight challenging missions and pick up intelligence while disabling enemy military units.

You can play on your own in single-player mode or with up to three friends, forming a four-man team via the Wi-fi adhoc mode. You can also play with 16 like-minded players over the internet.

Multiplayer mode allows you to play as either a Seal or as a mercenary in modes such as free-for-all, team death match, capture and hold, demolition and escort. There are eight large maps to choose from, and players can enjoy the game with little to no lag time. It is even possible to enable voice chat.

Like previous games in the series, Fireteam Bravo 3 uses a lock-on mechanic for aiming. Press the R button to target the nearest enemy and tap L to switch targets to keep the action moving along. The auto-health-regeneration system might be a welcome feature for first-time players of strategic action shooters, but veterans of the genre will find it takes a lot of the tension and urgency out of the game.

Completing missions and in-game tasks unlocks gear and weapons, earns medals and ribbons, either offline or by teaming up online. There are 70 primary and secondary weapons in the game, including explosives such as claymores and grenades.

Each weapon can be customised with attachments, ranging from optical and laser sights to silencers and under-barrel grenade launchers.

There may be no real challenge here for veteran gamers, but multi-player mode is getting the thumbs up from some quarters. Meanwhile, Fireteam Bravo 3 might not be as great as its predecessors but, for newcomers to tactical shooters, it is a good place to start.
