Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Beat the Devil's Tattoo (Vagrant Records)

When BRMC burst forth more than a decade ago their dark guitar-based rock'n'roll musings were held up as salvation from the likes of fellow countrymen Limp Bizkit. It wasn't to be. Although they enjoyed fame in Britain, America didn't embrace them and recent releases such as The Effects of 333 did little to improve their standing.

Perhaps BRMC are re-energised by new drummer Leah Shapiro. Whatever the reason for their return to form fans will be delighted. Beat the Devil's Tattoo covers little new ground but it does harness the best of BRMC's trademark sound: a gothic mix of bluesy grunge and wailing indie guitars.

The pacey and urgent Conscience Killer is followed by the distorted languid sexy grunge of War Machine. Mama Taught Me Better has an intensity matched to submerged vocals and the kind of driving guitars and pounding drums associated with Queens of the Stone Age. It's an energetic take on what made BRMC originally so good.
