Solid book of rides makes Whyte the value bet

The Derby Day meeting looks a particularly competitive programme and the Jockey Challenge promises to be an exciting contest, but when in doubt, back Douglas Whyte.

Whyte has nine rock-solid rides and can be relied upon to feature prominently throughout the afternoon and, at $3.40, he should be hard to topple.

Much has been made of Whyte's agonising choice between top Derby chances Super Satin and Brave Kid, but regardless of that result, he has a great book of supporting chances and with the most rides today will be right among the Challenge by sheer weight of numbers.

Leading rider Brett Prebble was posted $2.50 favourite last night when the fixed-odds market opened, and Gerald Mosse is also in contention at $5.50.

For those looking for an upset, perhaps the best value lies with ever-consistent Jeff Lloyd, who is worth a second glance at $30, and Weichong Marwing, who has eight rides and is an over-inflated $80.

Whyte, however, will get off to a flyer with Electronic Dragon, Splendid Sails and Shining Victory boasting strong claims in the first three races.

Industrial Legend, Fun Rider and Sight Winner each have the ability to claim points, and if the Durban Demon has pulled the right rein by sticking with Super Satin in the Derby, his backers will be on good terms with themselves knowing he still has Quick Touch and last-start winner Sapelli to finish the afternoon.
