Arrests will be protest focus in June 4 event

Liu Xiaobo

The recent arrest of protesters would become a focus of protests in the coming June 4 commemoration, the Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China decided last night.

The standing committee of the alliance yesterday made 'protest against political persecution' one of the focuses of their activities, along with 'release Liu Xiaobo' and 'Remember June 4'. Richard Tsoi Yiu-cheong, vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, was among people arrested by police on March 13 during a protest inside the central government liaison office compound in Sheung Wan on Christmas Day against the jailing of mainland dissident Liu Xiaobo for 11 years.

Others arrested were lawmaker Lee Cheuk-yan, former legislator 'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-hung, Leung Kwok-wah and Li Yiu-kee. Koo Sze-yiu, of the April 5 Action Group, was also arrested. They will appear in Eastern Court tomorrow.
