Official's wife made 17 shopping trips to HK

Prosecutors in Chongqing have exposed the wife of the municipality's disgraced former deputy police chief for spending heavily on luxury items and taking overseas trips roughly every two months during the past six years.

In fact, Liu Guanying - wife of Peng Changjian, the second-highest official involved in the 'anti-triad tornado' - especially liked shopping in Hong Kong.

She visited on 17 occasions in that time to buy luxury items.

Liu stood trial at Chongqing's No1 Intermediate People's Court on Monday after her husband was sentenced to life in prison by the same court last month.

Peng, 47, was convicted for corruption, possessing assets that could not be accounted for and conspiring with organised crime syndicates.

Prosecutors told the court that Liu and her husband had taken nearly 210,000 yuan (HK$238,000) in bribes from an entrepreneur between 2005 and last year, and laundered 1.4 million in bribes for Peng in the past four years, the Chongqing Morning Post reported.

She was listed by major international luxury item manufacturers as a VIP after spending heavily in their shops, and took at least 43 overseas trips for shopping and leisure during the past six years, the newspaper quoted prosecutors as saying.

'[Migration records] suggested that Liu made 17 journeys to Hong Kong, two to the United States, 11 to Germany, one to the Maldives, 11 to Thailand and one to South Korea between 2003 and October 2009,' the prosecutors said.
