Ainol V8000 HDS

There are many portable media players (PMPs) on the market, but there are a few challenges when it comes to playing videos. For example, high-definition videos will not play smoothly on most models without some kind of conversion on a PC.

That won't be a problem with the Ainol V8000 HDS series of PMPs. While the screen resolution of the 5-inch display is only 800 x 480 pixels, the model will play 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixel) quality videos.

As with most Ainol players, the V8000 HDS also supports a vast range of video formats, including AVI, RM/RMVB, FLV, VOB, DIVX, DAT, H.264 (MP4/MOV/AVI/PMP), MPEG 1/2/3, VCD, DVD, as well as the usual photo and music formats.

You can also play those files on your TV with the built-in HDMI slot. There is also a USB port that supports USB-OTG, which turns the V8000 HDS into a host machine.

This means you can transfer files to it directly from a USB memory stick, instead of relying on a connection to your PC.

In addition to the internal 8GB or 16GB storage memory, there is also a microSD card slot for expanding the memory. Other features include a built-in FM radio and a remote control.

Perhaps the only shortfall of the model is its battery, which only lasts about four hours, so it'll need a daily charge. The V8000 HDS costs HK$780 (8GB) and HK$950 (16GB).

Pros: multi-format video support, plays HD videos, FM radio, USB host feature

Cons: limited battery life, 14mm thick
