Police believe they have broken up a triad-controlled syndicate that made at least HK$10 million a month by making and selling pornographic video discs.

Twenty-five men and one woman, including 10 from the mainland, were arrested and 260 DVD burners and 175,000 pornographic DVDs seized in an operation that began on Wednesday. Police said the haul, the biggest in the city for years, was worth about HK$7 million.

Officers believe the operation was controlled by a unit of the Wo Shing Wo triad society. They are still looking for the mastermind.

Police raided 15 outlets across the city, a DVD manufacturing centre in Cheung Sha Wan and a packaging centre in Kwai Chung.

The mainlanders were paid HK$3,000 a month to work in these centres but were not allowed to go out in case they were arrested.

'They worked, ate and slept in the two centres, which provided them with cooking utensils, washing facilities and bunk beds,' said Chief Inspector Glenn O'Neill.
