Erykah Badu
New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh (Universal)

In the second part of Erykah Badu's New Amerykah series she focuses on familiar territory: love. The queen of nu soul tackles it from her every perspective - instructing a lover to change, delighting at her unfaithfulness and selflessly caring.

Badu's fifth studio album is the second in her New Amerykah series. The first written and released pre-Barack Obama was political; here, she's emotional and melodic. There is a gentle delivery to tracks such as Incense with its trembling harps while Umm Hmm and Turn Me Away (Get MuNNY) delight in the old-school feel of the arrangements. Window Seat is classic Badu, showcasing her instantly recognisable voice and washes over the listener like a warm wave.

There has always been a kookiness to Badu and mid way through the album she interrupts the album to say humans feel only two emotions: fear and love. Fortunately for us Badu uses her talents to tackle the latter.
