A good deed that could steal your heart

If you love animals, here is a chance to do a good deed. The clock is ticking for Hong Kong Dog Rescue, one of the city's most successful animal welfare groups. Its current landlord in Pok Fu Lam, Swire Properties, has insisted that all the dogs must leave by the end of the month after extending the lease several times. A plan to build a permanent home in Tung Chung has been dashed by government objections.

The group's founder, Sally Anderson (pictured), and her colleagues are desperate as they frantically look for temporary homes for the animals while securing a permanent kennel site.

We can all do our part. Take in a pet, if you can, for a few months. Better, adopt one. (Disclosure: one of our dogs, Roxy, formerly Lemon, was rescued by HKDR. She came into our lives after one of our puppies died from poisoning and now we can't imagine life without her.)

If you can't care for a pet, you can still help with a donation. The group is setting up an entertainment series to raise funds:

Pup Quizzes where Anderson and a panel of dog experts will be on hand to answer any dog-related questions about nutrition, socialisation, training, toy selection, and more at McSorley's SoHo, on April 20, and McSorley's Discovery Bay, on April 22.

Howl at the Moon Party at Coyote Bar and Grill in Wan Chai, on April 28

Comedython, a 12-hour comic fest on May 8 for lovers of comedy and dogs at Champs Bar in The Charterhouse Hotel, Causeway Bay.
