Christine Che travelled overseas by herself for the first time last year. Instead of joining a tour, though, the 16-year-old signed up for a language programme on an island she had never heard of before: Malta. Without fellow tourists to worry about, she was able to go all over the beautiful island.

'I love Malta. The people are all so passionate, and the island is full of energy, even after sunset. I surrounded myself in the island's cultural diversity, visited old ruins and explored the medieval capital of Mdina.

'It's hard to describe how wonderful my host family was. They treated me like one of the family. The day I left, they gave me a lot of souvenirs. Of course, my most valuable souvenirs are every moment I spent in Malta.

'My level of English increased a lot, even after only four weeks. As an outgoing girl, I became one of my teacher's favourite students. She saw my progress and really appreciated my positive learning attitude.

'I learned that by speaking up, you can learn more, make more friends - and your confidence will increase very quickly.'
