First-aid kit basics

A first-aid kit should contain emergency supplies for unexpected minor medical emergencies or accidents. It is a good idea to keep a first-aid kit at home, or to take one with you when you go on a trip. You never know when there is going to be a medical emergency. But what should you have in a first-aid kit?

First essentials

What are/is ...?

1 plasters

a. pieces of material that you can put over a small cut on the skin to protect it and keep it clean

b. medicated patches you can put over sore muscles

2 cotton wool

a. soft, fluffy material used for cleaning the skin or applying lotion

b. special cloth knitted out of cotton and wool used to wrap wounds

3 tweezers

a. small scissors used to cut nails

b. small pincers for pulling very small things out of the skin

4 antiseptic ointment

a. a thick lotion which contains medicine that prevents infection

b. a liquid to wash wounds with

5 antiseptic wipes

a. squares of thin material soaked in a medical liquid

b. pieces of plastic used to wipe skin clean

6 bandages

a. special gloves worn by a nurse or doctor

b. strips of material to wrap round an injury

a. ointment used to clean a cut - it can sting, or hurt

4 cotton buds

a. short sticks with a piece of cotton at the end used to clean wounds

5 eye wash

a. a liquid used to clean or soothe the eyes

b. a liquid used to remove eye makeup
