Start Over, Finish Rich
by David Bach
Broadway Books HK$80

It's the type of book you won't want people to know you're reading because the cover so exuberantly announces 'Recommit to wealth!' But Start Over, Finish Rich does have its purpose, which is to provide '10 Steps to Get You Back on Track in 2010'. Many of the chapters (one for each step) don't warrant reading, so basic is Bach's advice. For example: 'Don't stop saving, don't stop investing'; 'organising your finances'; and 'stop using your credit cards'. Then there is advice you already know but should hear again, such as having a cash cushion, without which 'we are only one job loss or one emergency medical expense away from disaster'. Bach, who has a slew of similar titles to his name, Smart Women Finish Rich among them, says 2010 will probably present great opportunities. 'Given the economic surge that usually follows a deep recession, you couldn't pick a better time ... to recommit to a wealthy future by saving and investing for retirement.' Bach's book eschews technical detail to enhance readability. For people needing motivation, he says 'A recession is a terrible thing to waste - so don't waste this one.'
