A stargazer is in critical condition with head injuries after falling asleep and tumbling 30 metres down a cliff.

The 22-year-old man went to the cliff at Lau Fau Shan at about 9pm on Wednesday to watch the stars and woke up in the water below at about 5am yesterday, police said.

Trapped in mangroves near Mai Po Nature Reserve, he shouted for help for about eight hours before marine police found him at 1.15pm.

Police said it was not known what time he fell. 'He told our officers that he was in water when he woke up at about 5am,' Marine West divisional commander Superintendent Jackie Ling Wai-po said.

He leaned against a bush to keep his upper body out of the water and shouted until workers at Tsim Bei Tsui Pier heard him and called police at about 1pm. 'He was bleeding from the head and injured in the lower jaw' when found by police about 15 minutes later, Ling said. 'There were bruises around his eyes.'

The man was pulled aboard the police craft and ferried to a nearby pier, then was taken by ambulance to Tuen Mun Hospital.

'It appeared he was very exhausted,' a fireman said. 'He was weak and in a disoriented state. He was unable to walk and was carried on a stretcher.'

The man lives in a village near the site of the accident.
