It is a myth that rules are made to be broken. At my school, Taft, we have to sign the 'Code of Contract'. This means we agree to follow the school rules.

In the past few months, several students have breached their contracts. They were asked to leave the school.

Some were warned after missing classes, behaving badly towards other students and teachers, taking part in dorm activities that are not allowed, leaving school without asking or behaving inappropriately when they were off campus.

But Taft has a 'one strike you're out' policy on drugs and alcohol on and off campus. Students who break these rules are asked to leave the school straight away.

Although some rules may seem unfair, they are there for your own good. When rules are broken, there can be harmful and long-lasting results.

Whether you are at school or elsewhere, you should remember your contract with the school. You should be mature, even if you are still a teenager.

Attending a residential independent school is a privilege, not a right. Your parents work hard to give you this education.
