Youngster's winning ride ends on sour note

Energy

Matthew Chadwick was yesterday slapped with another three-meeting suspension and a HK$40,000 fine for careless riding after lifting the Tony Cruz-trained Splendid Champion to victory in the Taiwan Delicacies Handicap. Chadwick pleaded his innocence in the stewards inquiry, but the panel of stipes found him guilty of causing interference to second placegetter Bravo Winner at the 800m mark and handed down another suspension and fine to the young rider. 'I pleaded not guilty, because this horse just has a bad mouth and is very green and the incident happened on the turn,' Chadwick said. 'This horse is like a little kid, he pulls too much, and wants to run home, but often he can't because he spends all his energy early. 'It's a good result for the owners, and it was nice to get back in the winner's stall, but it wasn't a good result for me in the end.' Chadwick will commence his suspension on June 6 and can return to the saddle on June 17.
