Lifeguards protest over lack of staff

Some 100 lifeguards from the Hong Kong and Kowloon Life Guard's Union protested yesterday against a shortage of lifeguards at public swimming pools. A spokesman for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department admitted that it had not been able to deploy enough guards to the two outsourced swimming pools in Island East Sports Centre and Tai Kok Tsui Sports Centre. But the department said it would hire 60 temporary lifeguards for June to August.
