The Hong Kong Sports Institute yesterday celebrated the completion of the first phase of the HK$1.8 billion redevelopment project in Sha Tin and welcomed back its elite athletes, who had been forced to train at temporary facility in Wu Kwai Sha.

Works included upgrading facilities for squash, badminton, table tennis and fencing as well as sports science and medicine services. It also includes provision of a new fitness training centre.

The three-phase project is expected to be completed in 2012 with the construction of a nine-storey multi-purpose building, a 52-metre swimming pool, a multi-purpose sports hall for tenpin bowling and wushu, a rowing boathouse and tennis courts.

The Sha Tin complex was vacated in 2007 for the 2008 Olympic Games equestrian events.
