Some of the most fashionable clubs, bars and hotels boast edgy industrial design not always associated with the hospitality sector. At East London's underground Cargo club the toilets are in metal cargo containers. Bistrotheque, also in London, was once a sweatshop and is now a restaurant and bar. The new owners have kept reminders of the building's past, including the huge silver pipes suspended from the ceiling. New York's Tribeca Grill is in a historic 1905 warehouse that was once a coffee factory. A combination of high ceilings, original exposed brick and oversized windows reflects the industrial character of the Tribeca neighbourhood. Then there's the Rough Luxe hotel in London, which makes a fetish of brutal industrial-style design. The hospitality business is often accused of serving up the cosy and unthreatening and being too eager to please when it comes to design, but these establishments challenge this view and prove how influential the sector can be.
