As sporty as he is, media executive Todd Miller's staying power will be sorely tested on a solo bicycle tour across the US later this month. Sony Pictures Television International's executive vice-president for Asia Pacific, Miller aims to cover 5,840 kilometres, crossing nine states in 50 days, to raise money for the charity A New Day Cambodia.

'I've been on biking and hiking trips but have done nothing on this scale. But you have to start somewhere, some time. I'll either get addicted to this or never want to ride a bike again,' he said.

The American decided to support the charity after seeing its work in Phnom Penh last year. The group provides shelter, education and food for more than 90 poor children who would otherwise have to scavenge in rubbish dumps to support their families. 'I talked to almost all of the 96 kids, mostly in their teens, and they send me e-mails every day. I was impressed by their hopefulness. At the end of the trip I felt so optimistic that the kids can have a good future,' he said.
