Diocese schools challenge fails

Joyce Man

The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong failed in an attempt to get permission to take its challenge against the government's school management reforms to the city's top court yesterday. The diocese sought leave in the Court of Appeal to 'ask a question of great and general importance' at the Court of Final Appeal, but the appeal court denied the application. The diocese had previously claimed the reforms removed its autonomy in running schools and filed for a judicial review of the reforms. The lower court ruled the reforms were constitutional and did not breach the Basic Law.
