Spreading hope in a bottle
There's no better way to recycle a bottle than using it to build homes for the needy. Cerebos Pacific, the company that produces Brand's products such as Essence of Chicken, has launched the 'Brand's Hope in a Bottle' programme to mark its 175th anniversary this year.
The programme aims to collect 300,000 used Brand's glass bottles from customers in Singapore, Malaysia, the mainland, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Collected bottles will be turned into building material by Ngee Ann Polytechnic Centre of Innovation in Singapore. The programme will benefit Habitat for Humanity, which will use the material to build houses for poor families in Chonburi province in Thailand. At least 20 houses will be built. In Hong Kong, the company is collecting used bottles from more than 60 residential estates until August. Collection bins will be placed in the estates.
Besides lowering building costs, recycling glass bottles helps limit the impact on the environment by reducing the need for cement which emits carbon dioxide, Timothy Chow Chi-hung, general manager of Cerebos (HK), says.
