Tackling absenteeism

Baat Gwaa was initially slightly puzzled by a few friends who were discussing how they would deal with the World Cup this month.

In fact, these friends, who are in personnel management, were trying to tackle the expected spike in absenteeism as employees skip work to watch the tournament.

According to previous World Cups, my friends say, typically one in three workers will take a day off to recover if there was a good match on the night before.

It sounds like the month-long tournament will have a serious impact on human resource management. Therefore, companies must have measures in place to prepare for lost productivity.

One friend points out that to combat workers skipping work, bosses need to make clear what is considered acceptable behaviour.

She suggests that employers encourage employees to take annual leave to watch matches or work earlier or later in the day to make up for lost hours.

One creative tactic to boost morale is to allow staff to watch the game in the office, within a pre-planned work structure to minimise any impact on productivity.

Baat Gwaa thinks that idea will definitely score with the staff.
