Fung stays anti-reforms
With moderate pan-democrats being accused of compromising their principles, Frederick Fung Kin-kee yesterday reiterated his position that the government's proposed electoral reforms would not be sufficient to obtain his support.
Fung, who is the only lawmaker from the Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood, has often been seen as the most government-friendly of the pan-democrats, having served on the provisional legislature after the handover when other pan-democrats boycotted it, and having come close to supporting similar proposals in 2005.
Fung said he would not vote for the proposals unless they included more steps towards universal suffrage and the government made a solemn pledge to abolish appointed seats on district councils.
Fung, who is also a member of the Alliance for Universal Suffrage, said he considered the call by the alliance and the Democratic Party for everyone to have a vote on five new seats proposed for Legco's district councils functional constituency would meet his demand for a 'clearer direction towards universal suffrage'.
He said talks were 'not yet dead' and that he and the pan-democrats were willing to continue talking 'until we press the button'.
