Harsh on Xi
IF I was an employee of a bank in China and removed some state or highly classified document from the bank without prior approval, I would probably have committed an offence under Chinese law.
If a friend induced me to remove the document, or assisted in its removal, he also would probably have committed an offence.
In the case of Xi Yang, it is unfortunate that he landed in such a situation.
The sentence of 12 years' imprisonment seems very harsh and he has my sympathy.
In the case of our friend in Singapore who is to receive 12 strokes of the cane for alleged vandalism, I do not see any protest in our streets. C. S. CHANG Causeway Bay
