Some 300 primary students from Chinese International School and Quarry Bay School gathered at the CIS gym for some close encounters with a baby Tyrannosaurus rex on June 11. The dinosaur was from the live entertainment show Walking with Dinosaurs - The Arena Spectacular.

The children eagerly reached out to touch the 2.4-metre dinosaur.

Sonny Tilders, the show's director, shared his experience of creating the dinosaurs with the students.

The team used welded steel to build the dinosaurs' frames. Muscles were created with bags made from stretchy material which contained the small polystyrene beads found in bean bags. 'We then added the skin made from another stretchy material. By building from the inside out ... we produced a real and life-like effect,' Tilders said.

The Creature Production Company will present Walking with Dinosaurs - The Arena Spectacular at the Asia-World Expo from December 22. The show features 20 'live' dinosaurs. Each dinosaur is life-size and weighs more than 1.6 tonnes.

The show, based on the award-winning BBC television series, began in Australia in 2007. In just three years, more than 1,200 shows have been performed worldwide.
