LA Candy Lauren Conrad Published by HarperCollins ISBN 9780061767593
In LA Candy, two best friends decide to move to Los Angeles to pursue their dreams and create new lives for themselves.
There, Jane Roberts works as an intern for a high-powered event planner, while Scarlett Harp begins her first year at university. Together, they are discovered by a hotshot television producer, who invites them to audition for a new reality series that will revolve around their lives.
Loosely based on the author Lauren Conrad's own experiences in the MTV hit series The Hills, the story unfolds to reveal the good, the bad and the ugly of what really goes on behind the scenes of a reality show - from the stars having to film their entrances to locations repeatedly to get them 'just right' to the producers' reactions when things don't go according to plan.
Thus, Jane and Scarlett begin to get sucked into the whirlwind of show business, despite what turns out to be their naive expectations that they are not technically 'acting'. They meet their co-stars, Gaby and Madison, who are sweet on camera but untrustworthy off. As filming progresses, Jane gets swept up in a relationship with a celebrity bad boy, Jesse, while still harbouring romantic feelings for budding actor Braden, who refuses to take part in any of the show's madness.
Scarlett, meanwhile, develops a crush on someone she is forbidden to date. A common theme is revealed, as polar opposites are constantly paired together in unexpected twists.
